KISSlicer Configuration

As a long time Slic3r user, on the last day of 2015, I tried out KISSlicer for the first time. This post is a quick summary of my configuration and finding.

My machine is a home built Prusa i3 that I modified for quick assembly and dis-assembly for easy packing and unpacking in about 1 hour.

The machine has a 20cm x 20cm x 18cm printing envelop and a J-Head with 0.4mm nozzle that uses 3mm filament.

Aside from 3D printing, the machine can be fitted to do laser engraving or light-weight CNC routing.

The KISSlicer version that I use is the Win32 version of version 1.5 Beta 1 - Sep 2014 which can be downloaded from this site http://www.kisslicer.com/download.html.

The test 3D object is Rocket Egg Cup which can be downloaded from Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26524).

The KISSlicer configurations are shown in the following photos. The filament is 3mm PETG.

Instead of 200 x 200 x 180, the bed size is set to 180 x 200 x 180 to take into account of the height of the servo motor mounted on the Extruder carriage for auto bed leveling.

Since I am using Pronterface to control the 3D printer and load and execute the gcode, the only part where I add custom gcode is in Postfix. The homing (G28), auto bed leveling (G29), setting of hotend and heat bed temperature, etc. that are usually put under Prefix and other sections are done manually in Pronterface.

Here I add custom Gcode so the machine will turn off the heat for the hotend and heat bed, life Z, move Extruder to X0 Y0, and turn off motor power.

The Result:

Generally speaking, I am happy with the quality of the print. The outer surface is quite smooth (no bulges). The inner surface has some bulges and on the bottom there are some strings of filament (from printing up side down without support).

I used red permanent marker to highlight the layers. I suspect the more obvious white layers were caused by inconsistent filament diameter.
